Iron deficiency is considered a comorbidity that can contribute to the progression of pulmonary vascular disease, affecting its outcome. In pulmonary hypertension, it has been shown to be related to worsening functional capacity, physical wellbeing and quality of life, even in some studies significantly increasing mortality. Although it is a controversial topic, recent trials consider iron deficiency as a possible therapeutic target since its replacement improved exercise capacity, quality of life and remodeling of the right ventricle.
