Abstract

The epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) continues to grow constantly and the prevalence of cardiovascular complications related to diabetes is increasing. According to observational studies carried out in Argentina, approximately 4 out of 10 patients with DM2 have cardiovascular disease, mainly atherosclerotic, chronic kidney disease and heart failure, which means that those involved in its management must systematically face the challenge of evaluation and treatment of these pathologies and their associated risk factors to reduce the disease burden. However, only half achieves optimal glycemic metabolic control and less than 20% achieves adequate control of all cardiovascular risk factors together.

Currently, there are strong evidence that supports the need to modify the glycocentric concept to a focus on the patient according to their cardio-reno-metabolic risk factors. The data from the different clinical studies in this regard invites to reflect on the need to take action and include changes in therapeutic strategies to improve the evolution of our patients in clinical practice. This joint position taken by the Argentine Federation of Cardiology (FAC), the Argentine Society of Cardiology (SAC), the Argentine Society of Diabetes (SAD), the Argentine Society of Hypertension (SAHA), the Argentine Society of Lipids (SAL) and the Argentine Society of Nephrology (SAN) is one more tool to help to change this current situation.
