Abstract

Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is one of the main public health problems of the 21st century. Its prevalence has increased in recent years, with an estimated 25% of the world's adult population presenting it. Scientific evidence shows that an unfavorable socio-economic position, together with a low level of studies, are associated with a higher cardiovascular risk. Objective: to estimate the prevalence of MS and its relationship with educational level in adults in the city of Salta. Methodology: descriptive, cross-sectional study. Secondary data (Salta 2014 Nutrition Survey). Two-stage stratified sample. Variables: MS criteria by the American Latin Association of Diabetes (ALAD), sex, age, schooling (<7.7-11, ≥12 years of age). Analysis: frequency distribution and association Chi2, Fisher. Kolgomorov. Comparison of mean values U Mann-Whitney, Student's test, ANOVA. Logistic Regression. EXCEL, SPSS 18. Results: 485 adults, both sexes, were evaluated. The overall prevalence of MS was 18.8%, higher in males. The mean values of TG and SBP in males were found above the critical cutoff points. The mean values of waist circumference and SBP were significantly higher in women with lower educational level. Logistic regression showed a higher probability of MS associated with males and lower educational level. Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of MS in the studied population, higher in males. The risk of MS associated with lower levels of education is evident, reflecting that the socioeconomic environment is an important determinant of the health of the population.
