Abstract

Two of the diseases that have most advanced in recent years in knowledge, diagnosis and treatment in Cardiology, are Lipids and Diabetes. In spite of the remarkable advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, an increase is expected for them, which would be essentially owing to the strong increase in the twin epidemics (obesity and diabetes). In this review, we present evidence in the area of Lipids, on the advancement achieved in the road travelled from genetics to applied clinics, with the therapeutic implications obtained from the discovery of new protective mutations from Mendelian Randomization in the design of clinical studies. Diabetes is a world epidemic, with strong global growth. It is an entity of very high cardiovascular risk, according to the time of evolution and the affected organs, which would make “a perfect storm” of the disease, with the requirement to reach the triple therapeutic goal (optimal levels of lipid, HbA1c and blood pressure management) in this expanding pathology.
